Ikoma-Loïs Openda, born on 16 February 2000, is a Belgian professional footballer who plays as a striker for Bundesliga club RB Leipzig and represents the Belgium national team.

Loïs Openda club career

Early career

Openda began his football journey with Patro Othee FC and later moved to RFC Liège during his early years. He eventually joined the youth academy at Standard Liège, continuing his development before stepping into professional football.

Club Brugge

In 2015, Openda joined Club Brugge’s youth academy and progressed to the senior team. He made his professional debut on 10 August 2018 in a Belgian Pro League match against Kortrijk, replacing Jelle Vossen in the 80th minute.

Loan to Vitesse

On 21 July 2020, Openda moved to Vitesse in the Dutch Eredivisie on a season-long loan. He scored his first goal for the club on 3 October 2020, helping Vitesse secure a 3–0 victory over Heracles Almelo.

Openda played a crucial role during his loan spell, including scoring Vitesse’s only goal in their KNVB Cup final against Ajax, which ended in a 2–1 defeat. His performances earned him a second season-long loan at the club in June 2021, where he continued to shine.

Lens

On 6 July 2022, Openda made a move to Ligue 1 side Lens on a five-year contract. He made an immediate impact, scoring his first goal in a pre-season friendly against Inter Milan on 22 July 2022.

Throughout the season, Openda delivered remarkable performances, including a hat-trick in a 3–0 win over Toulouse on 28 October 2022. On 12 March 2023, he set a Ligue 1 record by scoring the fastest hat-trick in the league’s history—three goals in just four minutes and 30 seconds—in a 4–0 win against Clermont.

RB Leipzig

On 14 July 2023, Openda signed for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on a five-year deal, with the transfer fee reported to be between €43 to 46 million, plus potential bonuses of €6 million.

Openda scored on his Bundesliga debut on 19 August 2023 in a 3–2 loss to Bayer Leverkusen. His Champions League debut for Leipzig saw him net a goal against Manchester City on 4 October in a 3–1 defeat. He followed this up with a brace in the reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium, despite Leipzig losing 3–2.

In his debut Bundesliga season, Openda emerged as Leipzig’s top scorer with 24 goals, finishing behind Harry Kane and Serhou Guirassy in the league standings. On 31 August 2024, Openda ended Bayer Leverkusen’s 15-month unbeaten run in the Bundesliga by scoring twice in Leipzig’s 3–2 victory.

International career

On 18 May 2022, Loïs Openda was selected for Belgium’s squad for the 2022–23 UEFA Nations League, featuring in matches against the Netherlands, Poland (twice), and Wales on 3, 8, 10, and 13 June, respectively. He later played against Wales again in the competition on 13 September 2022.

On 10 November 2022, Openda earned a spot in Belgium’s final squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar.
