Ante Budimir (born 22 July 1991) is a Croatian footballer who plays as a striker for La Liga side Osasuna and represents the Croatia national team.
Club career
FC St. Pauli
In August 2014, Ante Budimir signed a four-year contract with FC St. Pauli, a club competing in Germany’s 2. Bundesliga. The reported transfer fee was approximately €900,000. Croatian football expert Jurica Vranješ praised Budimir’s abilities during his signing, highlighting his aerial strength, combination play, and comparing his style to that of Dimitar Berbatov. However, Budimir struggled during his tenure, scoring only once in 20 appearances for the team.
Crotone and Sampdoria
On 1 September 2015, Budimir joined Italian club Crotone on a season-long loan. He made his debut on 7 September 2015, appearing as a substitute in a 4–0 loss to Cagliari. In March 2016, Crotone exercised their €1 million purchase option, securing Budimir’s transfer. Budimir thrived at the club, becoming Crotone’s top scorer with 16 goals in 40 Serie B matches, helping them secure promotion to Serie A as league runners-up. His goal tally ranked fourth in the league that season.
In June 2016, Sampdoria activated Budimir’s release clause, reportedly around €1.8 million, ahead of Crotone’s inaugural Serie A campaign. Budimir signed a contract with Sampdoria through mid-2020. However, after struggling to find regular playing time, he returned to Crotone on a one-year loan in 2017, with an obligation to buy. Following Crotone’s relegation, the club exercised the obligation, and Budimir remained with them on a permanent deal.
Mallorca
On 15 January 2019, Ante Budimir joined Spanish side Mallorca on loan. He opened his account for the club on 3 February, converting a Panenka penalty in a 2–0 home victory over AD Alcorcón, although his performance was marred by a subsequent red card. On 27 June, after helping Mallorca secure promotion to La Liga by scoring the opening goal in a dramatic comeback against Deportivo de La Coruña in the play-off final, he sealed a permanent transfer for a reported fee of €2.2 million.
During the 2019–20 campaign, Budimir showcased his scoring prowess by netting 13 goals, placing him as the eighth-highest scorer in La Liga that season.
Osasuna
On 5 October 2020, Budimir was loaned to La Liga club CA Osasuna for the 2020–21 season. Following an impressive loan spell, Osasuna secured his services on a permanent deal, signing him until June 2025.
In the 2023–24 season, Budimir achieved a career milestone by becoming Osasuna’s leading scorer, setting a personal record in La Liga with 17 goals in a single season.
International Career
On 27 August 2020, Ante Budimir received his first call-up to the Croatian national team from coach Zlatko Dalić for UEFA Nations League matches against Portugal and France. He made his debut on 7 October in a friendly match, contributing an assist to Mario Pašalić’s decisive goal in a 2–1 victory over Switzerland. Budimir netted his first international goal on 11 November during a thrilling 3–3 draw with Turkey in another friendly encounter.
Budimir was part of the Croatian squad that secured third place at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He made two substitute appearances during the tournament, coming on in the round of 16 match against Japan and the quarter-final against Brazil.
On 21 November 2023, Budimir scored a crucial goal in Croatia’s 1–0 victory over Armenia, ensuring the team’s qualification for UEFA Euro 2024.
Personal life
Ante Budimir’s family hails from the village of Ozimica in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was born in Zenica, the nearest town with proper medical facilities, but his family relocated to Croatia when he was just six months old to escape the war.
